Recognising scientific excellence and supporting the next generation of lipid researchers.
ICBL honours scientific excellence through its conferences. Awards are given both to distinguished senior scientists and to young researchers starting their careers — reflecting ICBL's dual mission of advancing the field and mentoring its future.
Young Researcher Awards
At each conference, ICBL supports early-career scientists through three award categories:
Poster Award Competition — the three or four best posters are selected on the basis of scientific and presentational merit.
Best Short Talk Award — recognising outstanding oral presentations by young researchers.
Reduced Registration — students benefit from reduced registration fees, making the meeting accessible to all early-career scientists.
The Van Deenen Lectures
Named in honour of the late Prof. L.L.M. van Deenen, a giant of 20th-century lipid science, the Van Deenen Lectures recognise distinguished contributions to lipid bioscience. A Van Deenen Lecturer is invited at each ICBL to present a plenary address.
Award criteria
Awards are decided by panels chaired by members of the Steering Committee. Criteria balance scientific rigour, originality, and — for young researcher awards — clarity of presentation and discussion. Details are confirmed in the programme of each conference.
